Founded in 1993, the International Toy Research Association (ITRA) is the longest standing professional research association dedicated specifically to the transdisciplinary scientific study of toys, games, and other types of playthings. Its specific focus on the toys themselves and putting toys at the center of analysis sets ITRA apart from other professional associations engaged in play research. The term “toys” is used as a general referent and includes any play object, whether physical, virtual, or hybrid, as well as games, puzzles, and indoor and outdoor play spaces.

ITRA works globally to promote and encourage toy research in order to broaden and disseminate expert knowledge about toys and promote the development of good toys for all. ITRA further aims to support to support and cooperate with local, national, and international organizations with similar purposes, to organize and arrange professional meetings, and issue publications consistent with the purpose of the Association. As a non-profit association, ITRA conducts its activities solely for scholarly purposes and educational purposes to be the epicenter of toy and game research connecting educators, scholars, designers and other professionals worldwide.

The International Toy Research Association currently comprises 96 members from 23 countries. ITRA is run by an executive Board, which is elected every three years in ITRA conferences.
